Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the top-ten causes of death in the United States – but 96% of people in its early stages don't even know they have it.
Lack of awareness is one of the key issues the American Kidney Fund is tackling, says Michael Spigler, Vice President, Patient Services and Kidney Disease Education.
Unfortunately, it takes a trip to the emergency room before many patients know there's a problem.
For patients who are aware of their CKD, many don't know that clinical trials may be an option. And without clinical trial volunteers, new treatments for CKD can't move forward.
"We have this great burst of innovation in the [kidney research] space, but not enough patients to help," Spigler said.
Antidote's Head of Partnerships, Lindsey Wahlstrom-Edwards, joined Spigler for a webinar on how patients can get involved in kidney disease research, and the resources AKF has to help. Watch it any time on YouTube:
